The first cargo of crude oil from ONGC’s recently launched Krishna Godavari deepwater project was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday aboard the vessel “Swarna Sindhu.”

According to a statement from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), this project will increase India’s oil and gas production by 7% each at its peak.

Located offshore near Andhra, the ONGC’s KG block KG-DWN-98/2 began producing oil in January.

Begusarai, in Bihar, hosted the flag-off event.

The field is now producing between 12,000 and 12,500 barrels of oil per day. After the oil reaches a critical level, it is moved from the FPSO to a ship that transports it to a refinery on the coast where it will be converted into fuels.

What role Begusarai played in the project is unclear.

The FPSO Armada Sterling V of Shapoorji Pallonji is utilized in the ONGC project to extract oil.

Shapoorji Pallonji said in a different statement that on February 27, the FPSO offloaded crude onto Swarna Sindhu.

“This successful demonstration of the robustness and reliability of all FPSO systems firmly positions India on the global stage,” it stated.

January 7, 2024, was “First Oil” for the FPSO.

The Prime Minister also gave the country a tour of ONGC’s phase-II development in the Krishna Godavari Nagayalanka NELP Block, phase-III Heera Redevelopment, and phase IV Mumbai High North Oil Field Redevelopment.

One of the most technologically complex projects is the KG-DWN 98/2 Deepwater Oil Field M in the Krishna Godavari Basin, which was developed with an investment of more than Rs 41,000 crore.

The project is expected to produce up to 45,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and roughly 10 million standard cubic meters of gas per day (MMSCMD) at its peak.
