Lack of sleep is a serious concern for people of all ages. A good night’s sleep is essential for both your physical and emotional health. The amount of hours one needs sleep each day differs by age, but on average, a person should sleep for at least 7 to 8 hours every day to be healthy. According to a recent study, your gender, as well as your age, influences how much sleep you need. According to research, women require around 20 minutes more sleep than men and here are the reasons why.
1. Insomnia, Anxiety and Depression
Women are 40 times more likely than males to experience insomnia and they are almost twice as likely to get an anxiety or depression diagnosis. These statistics come from the Sleep Foundation. These conditions are closely linked to insomnia, which makes it more difficult for women to regularly fall asleep.
2. Hormonal Changes
The sleep-wake cycle is mostly influenced by hormones. Women’s circadian rhythms are impacted by monthly and lifelong changes in hormones, which increases their need for sleep.
3. Menstruation
Due to cramps, headaches and bloating, about one-third of menstruating people have trouble falling asleep, which increases levels of daily fatigue and sleepiness.
4. Pregnancy
Women may experience sadness, sleep apnea, incontinence, discomfort and restless legs syndrome during pregnancy, all of which may disrupt their ability to get a good night’s sleep.
5. Menopause
According to the Sleep Foundation, hot flashes can cause sleep problems for up to 85% of women going through menopause. Additionally, there is a higher chance of developing sleep apnea, which results in less restful sleep and fatigue during the day.
