Thug Life box office day 1: Kamal Haasan-starrer earns ₹14 cr amid the controversy

Fans have been waiting in anticipation for the release of Thug Life, which is touted to mark the reunion of director Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after the classic film Nayakan. The film received stark comments for not getting released in Karnataka after Haasan’s Kannada language controversy. According to Sacnilk.com, Thug Life has minted 14.94 crore on its opening day.

The film recorded 48.72% Tamil occupancy on Thursday. The morning shows observed a handsome 50.66% occupancy, while 50.35% occupancy was reserved in the afternoon shows. The numbers subtly decreased with 45.15% in the evening shows. Thug Life is estimated to sway through the upcoming days and also serve well during the extended weekends.

However, it lost the estimated 35-40 crore, due to the cancellation of release in Karnataka as per The Hindu. The controversy began when Kamal mentioned in a promotional event, “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce called out the remark and stated to ban the film’s release in the state.
