Four players from Argentine Premier Division club Velez Sarsfield were provisionally arrested on Monday in connection with charges that they raped a lady in a hotel room earlier this month, according to the plaintiff’s lawyer.
The four people, Uruguayan Sebastian Sosa, Paraguay’s Jose Florentin and Argentines Braian Cufre and Abiel Osorio, were all placed under house arrest for 48 hours, awaiting the result of the inquiry.
Prosecutor Eugenia Maria Posse requested the detention order after conducting a three-hour interview with the accused victim.
In a statement shown on television, the accuser’s lawyer Patricia Neme stated that there were “sufficient elements to request pre-trial detention” since the four had “sufficient means” to leave if they wanted to avoid prosecution.
A sports journalist said that Sosa invited her to a hotel room in Tucuman, Argentina, where the other three were waiting.
She said she felt dizzy after a few drinks, fell down on a bed, and was then raped.
In a statement on Monday, Velez Sarsfield from Buenos Aires said that it had suspended the four players and requested an internal inquiry. “The Club reiterates its deepest concern about the reported events, which are clearly contrary to the principles and values of our institution,” it said.
