Liverpool had previously faced Atalanta in the 2020–21 Champions League group stage; they won 5-0 in Italy but lost 2-0 at home. AC Milan is hoping to win the trophy for the first time, and they will meet last season’s beaten finalists AS Roma in an all-Italian match.
Milan is second in Serie A, 16 points behind Inter Milan, while Roma is fifth, although they have won six of their last eight league games since Daniele De Rossi took over for Jose Mourinho.
Benfica will play against Olympique de Marseille, a French club that has reached the competition’s final three times.
