Manchester United teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo gets first call-up from England

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has received his first England call-up for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.  Having a breakout season, Mainoo, 18, is fast becoming one of United’s finest young talents.

Mainoo, who has established himself in United’s central midfield after making 20 outstanding appearances this season, has been promoted to the England team as they prepare for Euro 2024.

After being selected for the England Under-21 team, Mainoo joined Gareth Southgate’s senior side.

The England Football Association released a statement on Tuesday stating, “Kobbie Mainoo has received his first call-up to the England senior squad.”

England’s last games before Southgate selects his team for the European Championship in Germany are on Saturday at Wembley against Brazil and host Belgium on March 26.

Mainoo will get the opportunity to push his claim for a seat on the plane to the Euros, as Southgate is a long-time fan of the kid. At the Nations League draw in February, Southgate stated, “He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such. He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

Mainoo joined United at nine and made his League Cup debut against Charlton in 2023. He made his United debut in November of last year against Everton and in January, during their FA Cup victory against Newport, he netted his maiden goal for the club.
