In a thrilling English Premier League match on Monday, Chelsea defeated Newcastle 3-2, and Cole Palmer ended with a goal and an assist to make it an outstanding performance. Palmer, 21, controlled the strings in midfield for the London club.
With his eleventh goal of the season, he became the sixth player from Chelsea to score in five straight league games. The win reduced the four-point gap between Newcastle (10th) and Chelsea (11th) to one point.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Palmer scored. Just outside the Newcastle penalty area, he found space and blasted a low shot into the goal.
After six minutes, Nicolas Jackson gave the home team the lead by diverting a Palmer shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Even though star winger Anthony Gordon was injured ten minutes before halftime, Newcastle managed to come back and eight minutes later Alexander Isak equalized the score with a well-placed effort from eighteen yards out. Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk made it 3-1 for Chelsea in the 76th minute, five minutes after replacing Raheem Sterling.
Jacob Murphy scored for the visitors in the 90th minute, but his shot was unable to prevent Chelsea from obtaining all three points.
Chelsea’s Premier League standing is still 11th, but they are now within four points of West Ham’s seventh position, which should guarantee them a spot in the Europa Conference League.
