Tata Power Arm Strengthens Wind Portfolio with 198 MW Commissioning in Tamil Nadu

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, supplying renewable power to Tata Steel as part of a group captive arrangement.

The wind project, comprising 55 turbines of 3.6 MW capacity each, is expected to generate 31 million units of electricity annually. The project will offset around 26,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, strengthening Tata Steel’s sustainability roadmap.

One of the standout aspects of the project is its execution strategy. TPREL adopted a self-EPC approach, directly managing balance of plant activities, civil and electrical works, engineering and construction, transmission lines and substations. This model enabled tighter control over timelines, quality and cost.

Execution challenges, including difficult terrain and hard rock excavation, were addressed through innovative engineering solutions. Large turbine components were transported efficiently, and high-volume concrete pours were completed within tight timeframes through coordinated planning.

The project achieved industry-leading execution speed, completing foundation works in 126 days and turbine installation in 167 days, reinforcing TPREL’s reputation for delivering large-scale renewable projects efficiently.
