Although the meaning of home may seem straightforward, it is shaped by our unique experiences, depending on who you ask. For this feature, consider the creatives we spoke with. Everybody has a different idea of what a home is and how to design one to suit their needs and aesthetic.

Inclusivity

Shweta Kapur, founder of 431-88, said, “During its creation, I was captivated by the idea of inclusivity. That’s why I opted for a round seating arrangement—when everyone gathers, they are naturally compelled to face each other, fostering interaction and forming cosy, intimate groups”.

White is a color that speaks to Kapur because it is inclusive and pure, and it also sets the tone for the home that she designed.

This area greets guests as soon as they enter the house, regardless of how beautiful it is. Encircled by thick greenery and drenched in gorgeous natural light, it emanates a Zen mood.

“It’s the spot where I enjoy my morning cup of coffee and spend evenings, chilling with friends. There’s a sense of significance, a feeling of making a mark whenever I’m in this space.”

Close to the nature

The bedroom that Jagvir Matharoo, co-creative director of The Flame Store, and his boyfriend Martino Caramia have shared with us is a very meaningful area in their lives and represents their most intimate environment.

“The windows facing the bed open to the sea, allowing the most beautiful natural light throughout the day. It serves as a sanctuary where we unwind and recharge, making it a sacred and private haven for both of us,” added Matharoo.

The room is purposefully kept colorless, emphasizing natural light and aesthetic components. This deliberate simplicity highlights the tranquil ambiance, letting the special elements of the space and the soothing effect of the water take center stage.

Fetching the essence of Zen

Having a quiet place to retreat to is crucial for promoting creativity and relaxing in our hectic environment. The combination of pure white color scheme and natural light produces a calming atmosphere in the home designed by architect Ashiesh Shah.

“This nook, bathed in soft whites, goes beyond looks. It serves as a vessel, encapsulating intentional living. It reflects my strong belief that a home should be more than just a physical space—it should be a sanctuary, a peaceful retreat from the outside world’s chaos,” he stated.

Shah felt that using white in this area was a deliberate design choice rather than a random choice. Beyond aesthetic appeal, the main objective is to foster a profound sense of clarity and tranquility.
