Most Indian homes have aluminium foil in their kitchens since it is durable and works well at preserving food’s freshness. Aluminium foils are known to have two sides: shining and dull. But which side is better for wrapping or storing food?

Indian Express revealed in conversation with Ipsita Chakraborty, senior nutritionist at Hungry Koala that, “The variation in appearance is due to the manufacturing process; it does not affect the safety or health aspects of the food that comes into contact with either side of the foil”.

“Using either the dull or shiny side of aluminium foil for wrapping or cooking foods does not inherently affect the nutritional value or composition of the foods,” she added.

The main health risks associated with using aluminium foil for cooking or storing have to do with the metal’s propensity to contaminate food.

According to Chakraborty, “The choice between using the dull or shiny side does not impact this factor significantly”.

Tips for wrapping food with aluminium foil

  • Choose the side: When covering or wrapping food for display, the shiny side is frequently taken into account for its visual attractiveness.
  • Acidic and salty meals: To reduce aluminium migration, it may be wise to put an extra barrier (like parchment paper) between the meal and the foil while cooking acidic or salty foods (like tomatoes or citrus).
  • High-temperature cooked meal: To lessen the possibility of any possible aluminium migration, make sure the foil does not come into direct touch with the food when cooking at a high temperature.
  • Storage duration: Using containers made for long-term storage and making sure food is properly sealed will add extra safety and maintain nutritious quality for longer storage times.
