According to skin-tok, oil gritting is a technique that purports to help clear blackheads and draw debris out of your pores. But does this actually work, or is it just another passing trend? Vogue India had decoded its effectiveness backed by expert’s recommendations in an article.

The procedure consists of two steps: first, gently massage the skin with an oil-based cleanser for 10 to 15 minutes. Next, the oil-coated skin is covered with a clay mask. “The oil-based cleanser helps break down and dissolve excess oil, makeup, and dirt that can clog pores,” stated Dr Kiran Sethi, founder at Isya Aesthetics. “The clay helps draw out impurities, including the loosened blackheads, as it dries. When the mask is removed some people claim to see tiny ‘grits’ or plugs that have been extracted from the pores, hence the term ‘oil gritting’.”

Dr Varshini Reddy, founder at Glow Clinic, explains that, there isn’t enough evidence to support the theory that the rough deposits on your skin are actually sebaceous filaments. To elaborate, she explains that such deposits might possibly be dead skin cells that are released during massage therapy by mechanically exfoliating the skin.

Should you go with the trend wave?

What is oil gritting? Here's everything to know about the TikTok trend

“Using harsh products or applying too much pressure during the massage can irritate the skin, leading to redness, sensitivity, or even inflammation,” added Dr Sethi. “Even the overuse of oil gritting or using products that are too drying can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier function, making it more susceptible to damage and dehydration.”

While this method works best for people with oily and acne-prone skin, it’s crucial to remember that using it too aggressively or without using the proper items can cause breakouts or worsening of acne. “Those with skin conditions like rosacea or eczema should avoid oil gritting altogether, as it can aggravate these conditions.”

Dr Reddy reinstated, “For those with sensitive skin, a 15 minute oil massage might be too harsh and therefore I wouldn’t recommend it.” It can cause more sensitivity, and if you use an oil that clogs pores (comedogenic oil), it can also cause acne and irritation. Using a non-comedogenic facial oil is advised by her.

Ideal choices of Oils for Oil Gritting

Jojoba oil for skin nourishment

– Jojoba oil: Suitable for most skin types due to its resemblance to the natural oils found in the skin.

– Mineral oil: Known to be non-comedogenic, it can aid in the dissolution of impurities like as blackheads.

– Sunflower oil: Excellent for oil gritting due to its high vitamin and antioxidant content, lightweight nature, and ease of absorption.
