A majority of individuals can give up chocolate, sugar, or fruits without any problems, but have you ever thought about what would happen to your body if you eliminated everything but water from your diet? “A seven-day water fast entails giving up all meals and drinking solely water throughout that time,” stated Dr Babina N.M, chief medical officer at Jindal Natuecure Institute.
In conversation with Indian Express, Lakshita Jain, clinical dietitian and founder at NUTR, Delhi said, “Recently, Western studies have shown interest in the potential benefits of a 7-day water fast, especially regarding cancer. Yes, there can be issues like not getting enough nutrients, imbalances in electrolytes, and losing muscle if fasting for too long. However, if done for a short time and with care, it might have some benefits”.
“On the second day, you might feel very light. But from the third day, your body may start slowing down. If your body feels okay, you can continue, but if not, it is important to stop,” added Jain.
Dr Babina stated few tips:
“During a seven-day water fast, the following broad physiological and possible impacts could manifest,” added Dr Babina.

Autophagy: The body replaces unhealthy cells with healthier ones by removing damaged ones through an autophagic process that is triggered by fasting. Dr. Babina suggested that this could have potential benefits for cellular health.
Ketosis: During a fasting period, the body might enter a state of ketosis where it starts burning fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. This is a typical metabolic activity that occurs during a fast.
Weight loss: According to Dr. Babina, a seven-day fast is likely to result in weight loss since it reduces caloric intake and compels the body to burn fat and stored glycogen for energy.
Blood sugar control: Fasting has the potential to improve both insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation.
Detoxification: Some proponents claim that by eliminating accumulated toxins from the body, fasting helps with detoxification.

Energy levels: Initially, energy levels may decrease as the body adjusts to using alternative fuel sources. Dr. Babina advised that some persons may experience fatigue, dizziness, or agitation upon beginning a water fast.
Electrolyte imbalance: Extended fasting can lead to electrolyte imbalances, which can produce symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness, and irregular heartbeats.
Mental clarity: According to Dr. Babina, some fasting participants report improved focus and mental clarity, while others may find it difficult to focus.
Rest for the digestive system: Fasting spares the digestive system the work of breaking down food, freeing up energy for other biological processes like regeneration and repair.
