The rise in treasury yields on Wednesday caused a mix in US market indices. The S&P 500 was down 7.63 points, or 0.15%, at 5,167.64, while the Nasdaq Composite was down 79.22 points, or 0.49%, at 16,186.42 today.
The 10-year Treasury’s yield increased late on Tuesday, moving from 4.15 percent to 4.17 percent.Also slightly higher, at 4.61 percent against 4.58 percent, was the yield on the 2-year Treasury bill. The consumer price index (CPI) in the US is significantly higher than the Federal Reserve’s objective of 2%, according to data released on Tuesday on inflation.
Statistics on US producer pricing and retail sales will be made public on Thursday. Next week, the US central bank will have a meeting to discuss monetary policy. On Wednesday, Bitcoin reached a new all-time high of $73,664. On Wednesday, European stock markets saw gains.
The FTSE 100 in Britain increased by 0.4% to 7,777.07. The CAC 40 of France increased by 0.7% to 8,147.66. The DAX in Germany increased by 0.1% to 17,975.56. The Euro Stoxx 50 increased by 0.5% to 5,008.72. Asian stock markets had a 0.3% decrease on the Nikkei 225 in Japan, closing at 38,695.97.
The Hang Seng Index for Hong Kong decreased by 0.1% to 17,082.11. Due to a decrease in US crude stocks, crude oil prices increased by 2% on Wednesday.
By 1445 GMT, the price of a barrel of Brent crude futures for May had increased by $1.54, or 1.88 percent. US West Texas Intermediate oil for April increased in price by $1.59, or 2.05%, to $79.15.
A declining US dollar helped to boost gold prices on Wednesday. Spot gold increased by 0.5% to $2,167.29 an ounce as of 10:38 a.m. EDT (1438 GMT). US gold futures were up 0.2% at $2,170.00.
