The first domestically produced microcontroller semiconductor has been successfully designed by an Indian startup, providing consumer electronics manufacturers and digital infrastructure in the nation with a more affordable choice.
Launched on May 6, Mindgrove Technologies—which is supported by Peak XV Partners and nurtured by the IIT Madras Incubation Cell and Pravartak Technologies Foundation—unveiled Secure IoT, India’s first commercially available high-performance system on chip. The company stated that the chip is thirty percent less expensive than those on the market.
A microcontroller chip is a microcomputer that is integrated into a system to manage a specific task, like displaying data or receiving signals from a distance. It has memory, peripherals, and one or more processor cores.
According to the statement, the chip can be found in a variety of gadgets, including smartwatches, smart city gadgets like linked gas, water, and electricity meters, fans, speakers, and even the battery management and control systems of electric cars.
“The pandemic revealed the wide gap between high-end and low-end players in the embedded systems space, with the latter prioritizing cost and volume over the chip’s actual performance,” stated Shashwath TR, chief executive and co-founder at Mindgrove Technologies. “Thus, we set out to design chips that target the middle market. ‘Right-sizing’ has been the key differentiating factor when it comes to Mindgrove, giving it an edge over others, with enhanced flexibility, adaptability, security and cost-efficiency coupled with a robust support system.”
The sole commercially available Indian-made chip in the segment, the chip is a high-performance microchip controller with a clock frequency of 700 MHz. According to the startup, it also offers design support to quicken innovation and production scale.
