Although the Indian civil aviation sector is one of the fastest-growing in the world, only Air India and Vistara currently operate wide-body aircraft in their fleets.

According to aviation consultancy CAPA India, Indian airlines would need over sixty more wide-body aircraft by the end of the 2032 fiscal year in order to service the long- and ultra-long-haul markets.

On Thursday, IndiGo declared that it has placed a definitive order for thirty A35-900 aircraft, with the option to purchase an additional seventy aircraft. The firm stated that the long- and ultra-long-haul markets in India are “ripe for disruption, provided that Indian carriers lead the charge” during a webinar on the topic of “Outlook for Wide-body Aircraft in India.”

The Air India group, Akasa Air, and IndiGo are growing their businesses.

The robust demand for non-stop connection means that long and ultra-long haul operations can be fundamentally lucrative, it said, adding that increased pricing thresholds and stability are evident.

Additionally, the report stated that about 100 wide-body aircraft will be needed by Indian carriers by FY2032 to service long- and ultra-long-haul markets, meaning the airlines will need to purchase 60 additional wide-body aircraft by the deadline. Ultra-long haul flights typically take more than 16 hours to complete.
