Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa president Amit Palekar was arrested by the Goa police’s crime branch after being questioned regarding allegations of evidence destruction and attempting to obstruct the investigation of a fatal accident. The accident involved a Mercedes car that reportedly collided with multiple vehicles, resulting in the tragic deaths of three individuals earlier this month.

Palekar, escorted to the crime branch office, decried the arrest as a political conspiracy and accused it of being driven by “dirty politics.” He expressed his belief that the arrest was an attempt to tarnish his image and claimed that he had been under pressure to join the BJP in the days leading up to his arrest.

The incident, which occurred on August 6, witnessed a Mercedes car colliding with several vehicles near Banastari bridge, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. The accused, Shripad alias Paresh Sinai Sawardekar, aged 45, was apprehended by the police and found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He faced charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act.

Following the accident, local residents, along with those from Divar island and neighboring areas, rallied for justice for the victims. They accused the local police of conducting an imbalanced investigation and protecting culprits. Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai even urged the chief minister to transfer the case to the crime branch. In response to these demands, the case was eventually handed over to the crime branch for investigation.

The arrest of Amit Palekar in connection with the accident case has added a layer of complexity to an already sensitive matter, raising questions about the intersection of politics and law enforcement.
