As electric vehicles (EVs) steadily make their way onto more Indian roads, it’s not just the carmakers driving the change. Behind the scenes, a lesser-known but vital contributor—the Tooling division of Godrej Enterprises Group—is helping shape the future of EVs with precision parts made right here in India.

With EV sales up 28% this May and nearly 2 million units sold in FY25, the demand for locally made, high-quality components like battery housings, lightweight engine parts, and sheet metal structures has surged. These aren’t just parts—they’re the foundation of EV performance and safety. And that’s where Godrej’s tooling expertise comes in.

Knowing this shift was coming, the company started preparing early—investing 2–3% of its revenue in research, innovation, and high-end machinery to improve manufacturing efficiency and cut dependence on imports. Today, up to 15% of its business revenue comes from EV-focused tooling, a strong sign of just how quickly the landscape is evolving.

Pankaj Abhyankar, Business Head, Tooling business of Godrej Enterprises Group, said, “As EV manufacturers scale up production to meet growing consumer demand, they require tooling partners who understand both the technical complexities and the commercial imperatives of this rapidly evolving sector. India’s EV transition is not just about vehicles, it’s about building a resilient, self-reliant, and globally competitive ecosystem. At Godrej Enterprises Group, we are proud to be enabling this transformation through our precision engineering solutions. These world-class tooling systems help reduce dependence on imports while improving lead times, cost efficiency, and product reliability.”

Godrej is also looking to bring home the manufacturing of some tools that are currently imported. That move could make parts more accessible and help Indian suppliers reach global markets.

This approach fits in with the government’s ‘Make in India’ push, but it also goes beyond slogans. It’s about giving Indian manufacturers the ability to compete globally in an industry that’s moving faster than ever.

As India’s clean mobility story unfolds, it’s not just about who builds the cars—but who builds the tools that build the cars. And in that quiet but crucial role, Godrej’s tooling team is helping drive the EV revolution forward.
