A quiet but powerful shift is underway across India — pet parenting is no longer a metro-only phenomenon. From morning walks to monthly vet visits, smaller towns are embracing pets as family, with rising affection matched by growing spending.
Just five years ago, metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru made up nearly 60% of India’s pet care demand. Today, that share has dropped to 45%, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities driving almost half of all demand. This change reflects how deeply pet companionship is being woven into the fabric of families across the country.
What’s Driving the Boom?
The rise of remote and hybrid work has encouraged many to return to their hometowns or move to quieter cities. With more space, less stressful routines, and family support, people are finding it easier — and more joyful — to welcome pets into their lives.
Leading this shift is a younger, digitally savvy generation. They seek advice from online communities, shop on digital platforms, and explore categories once considered optional — from toys to clothing and accessories — which are now integral to the pet care basket.
At the same time, corporates establishing HQs or enabling work-from-home in Tier 2 cities are fueling dual-income households. This is pushing demand for quality packaged pet food and healthcare, strengthening the human-pet bond.
Rising Spend on Pets
A growing share of pet parents in smaller towns are first-timers. While metros are gravitating toward smaller dog breeds suited to compact apartments, Tier 2 and 3 cities continue to prefer medium-sized breeds, reflecting lifestyle differences.
Spending is rising too. Industry insights suggest that pet parents in India now allocate about ₹50,000 annually to pet care — nearly 5–8% of household income. Premium packaged food, treats, accessories, and specialised products are driving this premiumisation, with monthly spends rising significantly across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.
Beyond Numbers, a Cultural Shift
India’s pet care market is projected to reach $2.5 billion by FY27-28 — doubling in just a few years. But the real story goes beyond market size. It’s about the deepening emotional bond between people and their pets, cutting across geography and lifestyle.
As more families discover the comfort and joy of having a furry companion, pet parenting is no longer confined to big cities. It has become a lifestyle choice that is rapidly taking root in the heart of small-town India.
