Taneira Unveils GI-Tagged Saree Collection on National Handloom Day

Taneira, the women’s ethnic wear label from the Tata Group, has rolled out a collection of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged sarees to commemorate National Handloom Day. The move positions the brand among the first in India’s saree industry to introduce such certified weaves, aimed at safeguarding authenticity and recognising traditional craftsmanship.

The debut range features GI-certified Banarasi, Chanderi, and Maheshwari sarees, with plans to extend the initiative to 10 more weaving clusters. A GI tag certifies that the fabric originates from its designated region and is made by skilled artisans using traditional techniques.

To enable this, Taneira is working with vendor partners and weaving communities, providing assistance with documentation, legal processes, and on-ground certification support. Alongside GI tags, the sarees also carry other established quality marks, including the Handloom Mark, Silk Mark, Zari Certification, Khadi Certificate, and Pashmina Certification.

“On National Handloom Day, we are proud to advance our mission of preserving India’s weaving heritage while empowering artisan communities,” said Ambuj Narayan, CEO, Taneira. “Through partnerships with craft clusters and certified weaves, we strive for a transparent supply chain that lets customers make informed and conscious purchases.”

Founded in 2017, Taneira works with over 100 weaving clusters across the country, operating 18 Weavershala facilities that modernise processes without compromising on traditional techniques. The brand now has more than 80 outlets in 41 cities and an e-commerce platform with global shipping.
