Vi Business, the enterprise arm of Vodafone Idea Limited, has unveiled a major initiative to deploy 12 million smart meters across India over the next three years, significantly advancing the country’s energy digitization efforts.
This large-scale rollout aligns with the India Smart Grid Mission and aims to revolutionize how utilities and consumers manage energy consumption. The deployment of smart meters will enable Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), helping distribution companies (DISCOMs) reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, while giving consumers real-time insights into their electricity usage.
At the core of this transformation is the Vi Business IoT Smart Central platform, which offers utilities comprehensive visibility and control over millions of connected meters. Backed by over five years of experience in AMI and IoT solutions, Vi Business has built scalable and secure systems tailored to India’s evolving energy ecosystem.
The company has also developed structured processes for smart meter onboarding and integration, supported by telco-grade data security protocols. A dedicated IoT Lab enables pre-deployment testing and certification, ensuring seamless and reliable implementation at scale.
Arvind Nevatia, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vi, said:
“We are pioneers in the smart meter energy ecosystem, first to deploy smart meters in 2018 and first to launch innovations like the IoT lab. We continue this commitment with an aim to deploy 12 million smart meters to reduce energy losses, improve efficiency and enhance consumer experience across India”
With this initiative, Vi Business strengthens its position as a leading enabler of digital infrastructure, supporting India’s vision for a smarter, more efficient, and sustainable energy future.
