Cillian Murphy is returning for the new edition of the trilogy, following his role in a critically acclaimed and cult zombie film. Danny Boyle’s film 28 Years Later is slated to tell the story of a zombie apocalypse.

A few details on Danny Boyle’s impending horror film 28 Years Later were revealed by the chairman of Sony Pictures during the Cannes Film Festival in 2024.

Speaking about Cillian Murphy on Friday at one of the most prominent film festivals that is now going on, Rothman told Deadline, “Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way.

The executive continued by saying that Danny Boyle’s future project is among his best achievements. Speaking at the formal occasion, he added that this film is also “combined with a very commercial genre,” drawing comparisons to Edgar Wright’s portrayal of a similar genre in Baby Driver.

Rothman said as he wrapped off his remarks, “Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.”

Cillian Murphy was announced as the film’s executive producer at the same time as the third installment was revealed.Murphy portrayed Jim in the first episode of the previously mentioned zombie series, 28 Days Later.

When Jim, a bicycle courier child, emerges from a coma, he discovers that a virus derived from animals has impacted a significant portion of the human population. Jim and the other survivors must battle the zombies that this virus has transformed them into, played by Cillian Murphy.
