Angelina Jolie is in the news because of the incredible reception she recently received for her role in the psychological drama film Maria, which had its world debut on August 29 at the Sala Grande Theater as part of the Venise Film Festival. THR reported that she was given an 8-minute standing ovation for her performance at the event.
Jolie spent six’ months practicing for her role as the late, renowned opera singer Maria Callas in the film.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Angelina Jolie about her motivation for working on the film Maria, which depicts the tragic tale of famed opera singer in her final days in Paris in the 1970s.
Since then, Jolie said, she had not sung or spoken about Maria, “which doesn’t always happen to me, but this one really kind of took me.” She said that this was her first discussion of Maria because the topic was “so intense.”
She went on to say that although she enjoys creating and Callas enjoyed singing, there were circumstances that altered the experience and stole the “joy”.
The Eternals actress also considered why she felt compelled to share this tale, stating that the late opera singer suffered greatly and put in a major deal of effort because she was met with hostility by those who didn’t think she could live up to their expectations. Jolie said that she started to “care” about her and felt compelled to share that part of the tale.
Director Larrain, who stated in a recent interview with Vanity Fair that Jolie had all the necessary traits for the role. The director went on to say that he was looking for an actress who could embody the presence and weight of the role in an organic way, and he thought the actress fit the bill.
He also disclosed the arduous training that Jolie underwent to prepare for the character, stating that she took voice lessons, learned breathing exercises, worked on her posture, and acquired an accent. Jolie acknowledged that the job was “so difficult,” but she put a lot of effort into it.
