On January 6, HYBE boy band BOYNEXTDOOR released their first digital single, “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU,” which quickly became popular. Their song is the first to make it into the top 10 of Melon’s Top 100, a well-known music streaming service.

With their profound and poignant song, “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU,” the six-member band kicked off the new year with a bang, peaking at No. 9 on the Melon Top 100 list.Woodz took over at No. 10 with Drowning after BOYNEXTDOOR. Members Woonhak and Taesan co-wrote the song.

The song describes how an artist’s health deteriorates after splitting from his soul. Although the song’s lively melody may lead listeners to misunderstand its genre, a detailed examination of the words reveals that it is depressing and self-deprecating. The song is about the artist’s hatred of picking up his instrument and going about his daily work as though nothing had happened, for instance his breakup.

“Being a Gen Z breakup song, every part (of the song) is a highlight,” Woonhak mentioned.

“We thought the emotion of patheticness would suit well with the melody and felt it would be fresh to sing about self-deprecating portrayal after a breakup,” the group added.

This marks the first solo tour that the six members of BOYNEXTDOOR—Jaehyun, Sungho, Riwoo, Taesan, Leehan, and Woonha have taken since their debut. They will perform  12 shows in six cities, including Osaka, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta, since the tour began with performances in Incheon on December 14 and 15 of last year.
