On September 8, Billboard made an announcement that got K-pop lovers thrilled and ignited the internet. The only Asian musicians acknowledged on the esteemed 2024 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Honor Roll are BTS’s RM and V, who have inked their names there for the first time.
Using its official social media accounts, Billboard announced the announcement along with the riveting message, “Shout out to the 2024 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop HONOR ROLL.” The various talent that has molded the R&B and Hip-Hop scenes is highlighted in this year’s list, with BTS’s RM and V standing out.
V’s inclusion on the list is a result of the profound influence his September 8th-released solo debut album, LAYOVER, has already had. According to Hanteo Chart, the album set a record-breaking first-week sales total of 2.1 million copies, demonstrating its extraordinary success.
Layover, a member of BTS, tied with fellow members Jimin and SUGA for the highest-charting Korean solo artist in Billboard history with his debut at number two on the Billboard 200 in the US.
In the meantime, RM’s May 24 release of his second studio album, Right Place, Wrong Person, solidifies his status as a trendsetter in the music business. With 54,000 album-equivalent units sold, this album became RM’s biggest debut entry to date and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. Come Back to Me and LOST! are two highly acclaimed tracks that have helped RM’s remarkable career comeback.
The fact that Lee Seok Jun’s film RM: Right People, Wrong Place chronicles RM’s journey only heightens the anticipation. It tells the story of the eight months that preceded RM’s enlistment and the recording of the album, will have its world premiere from October 2–11 at the 29th Busan International Film Festival.
