Jason Momoa has announced that he will return for the next episode of Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi story, even though his character, Duncan Idaho, had a heroic death in the first Dune (2021) movie. Fans were thrilled when Momoa revealed during a recent interview on TODAY that he would be returning to his role in Dune: Messiah. “I’m making a comeback,” he casually said during his chat with Craig Melvin, adding, “You heard it first, right here with you, baby.”
How could Duncan Idaho, the swordmaster of House Atreides and a mentor to Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet), return after giving his life in the first movie to help Paul and his mother escape an ambush? Duncan doesn’t remain dead for very long, as everyone who has read Frank Herbert’s Dune book series knows. Duncan is resurrected as a clone in the novels, and it appears that Dune: Messiah may be doing the same.
About Duncan’s resurrection, Momoa replied, “Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be…I’m going to be coming back.”
He revealed in October 2024, as quoted by Hindustan Times that he was far into the writing of Dune: Messiah, or whatever the final title of the third installment will be. Villeneuve shared, “In order to save his friends, [Paul] has to start a war.” The political intrigue, imperial court drama, and cultural conflicts that follow Paul’s victory are all extensively explored in Dune: Messiah as stated in the book.
The returning cast has not yet been revealed, yet fans can anticipate Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Zendaya as Chani, Timothee Chalamet as Paul, and a number of other celebrities like Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlotte Rampling.
