British-born Millie Bobby Brown grabbed headlines earlier this week when fans noticed she appeared to have switched from her British accent to an American one while making the rounds to promote her new movie, “Damsel.”

However, when questioned about the abrupt change in a conversation with TikToker Max Balegde on Friday, the “Stranger Things” actress stated that she grew up in both countries and “can’t help” switching between accents depending on who she is with.

Millie said, “Let me just speak to that real quick. I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America.” She added, “I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt. And so I want to mimic people.”

Though Brown grew up in Bournemouth, England, she left her home country at the age of eight to start an acting career. Her major break came three years later when she was cast as the American character Eleven in the popular Netflix series.

The actress stated that when she is among Americans such as Jimmy Fallon and her fiancé, Jake Bongiovi, she feels compelled to “replicate” their accents and vice versa. “Now that I’m in England I want to replicate that! I don’t do it intentionally and I’m sorry if it offends you!” she said. “But listen I am trying my best!”
