Oh Yeong-su, South Korea’s veteran actor, best known for his role in the highly regarded series “Squid Game,” was found guilty of sexual misconduct on Friday, a local court announced in a statement.
The 79-year-old was found guilty of assaulting a woman in 2017. He gained popularity in 2022 after winning the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a television series.
The actor was given an eight-month prison term with a two-year suspension, the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court told AFP. He is also required to take 40 hours of sexual violence education classes.
Judge Jeong Yeon-ju emphasized the victim’s consistency and credibility throughout the trial, saying that her statements were genuine and reflective of actual experiences.
According to the Suwon District Court, O Yeong-su was formally accused in 2022 of allegedly sexually abusing a lady twice when he was staying in a rural area for a theatre performance in 2017.
With 111 million viewers within a month of its premiere in 2021, ‘Squid Game’ increased South Korea’s cultural impact to new heights, following in the footsteps of worldwide recognition achieved by entities such as K-pop phenomenon BTS and Academy Award-winning film ‘Parasite’.
