Winona Ryder vanished from Hollywood for a length of time, after being charged with stealing in December 2001 and receiving negative media coverage,

Ryder, 52, provided an update on the aftermath of the incident in an interview with Esquire despite having previously acknowledged the arrest. “I checked out. I believe I simply checked out” she told the magazine in response to a question about how she handled her arrest. I think I was just checking out.

The Age of Innocence, Little Women, Girl, Interrupted, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and other movies starred Ryder, who rose to fame in the 1990s after her performance in Tim Burton’s production.

The actress was charged with stealing apparel valued at $5,500 from a Beverly Hills, California Saks Fifth Avenue store. She was found guilty of grand larceny and stealing a year later, in December 2001. In addition to fines, she was sentenced to three years of probation, community service, and community work. She moved from Los Angeles to San Francisco when she stopped performing.

She mentioned, “There was a time when I wasn’t in season.”

In the late 2000s, Winona returned to the big screen with a number of cameos in Star Trek and Black Swan, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Darren Aronofsky. But it wasn’t until she portrayed Joyce Byers in the hugely successful Netflix series Stranger Things that Winona became renowned.
