In the recently released Deadpool & Wolverine directed by Hugh and Ryan Reynolds, Wesley made an unexpected cameo as Blade, the half-vampire daywalker Eric Brooks.

Wesley broke all previous records by playing the vampire hunter again in the movie. He made his screen debut as the character in the 1998 movie Blade, and he returned to the role twenty-five years later. Up until Wesley made the brief cameo, Hugh held the record for the most appearances as Wolverine in an X-Men movie (2000).

With his final role as Blade in the 2004 movie Blade: Trinity, he also set a record for the longest time between character appearances in a Marvel movie, 19 years and 231 days. Between Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), there was a 17-year lapse in the story of Alfred Molfina’s Doctor Octopus.

Wesley stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that while he had “very interesting conversations,” none of them resulted in Blade’s return. That all changed when Ryan called to ask him to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Wesley stated, “I thought it didn’t make sense to me, but (when) you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue after 20 years, you go, okay, I got to take this call, let’s see what this is about. He told me the idea… They said, yes and it’s a go, if you’re in, we’re in. Here we are.”
