Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp, and other celebrities join forces to honor and talk about the legacy of director Tim Burton in a forthcoming documentary series. Brimming with seasoned experts from Burton’s iconic film canon, the new documentary explores the life and work of the creative brilliant director.

The four-part documentary series, which was directed by Tara Wood (21 Years: Richard Linklater), features commentary from Burton’s longtime partners, including Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Keaton (Batman, Batman Returns), and Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice).

It also features Johnny Depp, with whom Burton has worked on a number of films, including Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and more.

The show follows Burton’s development from his early years in California, which include never-before-seen photos and early home videos, to his most recent film, Beetlejuice.

Forbes claimed that Wood’s approach aligns with an interview with Burton, which she has done in her previous documentaries about Richard Linklater and Quentin Tarantino. The movie is shaped by his coworkers, who in this instance provide a more intimate, untaught view of Burton’s life and creative process without requiring the director to talk about himself.

Depp shared, “My agent sets up this meeting with Tim Burton after Crybaby and I was sent the screenplay for Edward Scissorhands.”

When reflecting on that time, Depp says the writing was something that really resonated with him and made him feel a strong connection to the role.

He added, “What I felt from reading that screenplay was … it had passed through everything, anything solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose attacked me emotionally was that Edward was me … it’s exactly what I should be doing.”

Johnny Depp stated, “He’s an auteur, he’s a visionary, he’s an artist with images and thoughts. He’s got a lot going on in there. Tim is the real thing.”
