Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency’s release date delayed; here’s why

Emergency, Kangana Ranaut’s debut directorial film in which she plays the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, encountered difficulties. The movie, which was scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, has been rescheduled.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#BreakingNews…#Emergency postponed… Won’t release on 6 Sept 2024. #ZeeStudios #KanganaRanaut.”

Kangana and the production company, Zee Studios, have not yet released a statement regarding the postponement of the film’s release as of this writing. Manikarnika Films, the production company of Kangana Ranaut, has not released a statement either.

On August 30, Kangana posted a clip on her social media verifying that the film is not certified by the CBFC. She added, “Kayi tarah ki afwahein ud rahi hain ki humari film Emergnecy ko censor certificate mil gaya hai. It is not true. In fact, humari film clear ho gayi thi lekin uski certification rok li gayi hai kyuki bohot zyada dhamkiya aa rhi hain jaan se maaar dene ki censor waalo ko (There have been rumors circulating that my film Emergency has been certified by the Censor Board. This is not true. While our film did receive clearance from the CBFC, the certification was delayed due to numerous death threats against members of censor board).”

It also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik.

What went wrong?

The issue started, according to Indian Express, a few days ago with the release of the trailer for Emergency. A legal notification was sent to the CBFC by the Shiromani Akali Dal unit in Delhi, seeking that the film’s release be stopped because of how Sikhs are portrayed. According to state media, Sikh organizations had a strong reaction to the movie’s trailer.
