Legendary Odia actor Uttam Mohanty breathes his last at 66

Mohanty received coveted state honors, including the 2012 Odisha Living Legend Award.

TV and film actor Uttam Mohanty, who starred in over 160 films in various languages, was the first superstar to grace the Odia cinema for decades. However, the renowned actor passed away unexpectedly at the age of 66, according to an ANI report, after making significant contributions to the Indian cinema industry. According to reports, he was receiving treatment at a hospital in Gurugram for liver cirrhosis. On Thursday night,  the actor succumbed after a long battle.

According to reports, the actor was rushed to the hospital earlier this month and spent 20 days in the intensive care unit on organ support. Actor Babushaan Mohanty, his son, confirmed the news of his death in a public statement later.

With the 1977 Odia-language film Abhimaan, Uttam Mohanty made his acting debut, making him a household name. Thereafter, he appeared in other films, including Rajanigandha, Tunda Baida, Sahari Bagh, Ramayana, Ram Balaram, and Nijhum Ratira Sathi. According to reports, he has acted in around 30 Bengali films and appeared in almost 150 Odia films.

He also starred in the Hindi film Naya Zaher in 1991. It also featured Navin Nischol, Satabdi Roy, Shiva Rindani, and Disco Shanti.  He was survived by actress Aparajita Mohanty, his wife, Babushaan Mohanty, his son. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his sorrow on the passing of the renowned actor and declared that his final ceremonies would be held with full state honors.
