In 2020, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt returned to helm Sadak 2, breaking his vow to not direct another project. He no longer intends to follow suit, though. He claimed in an interview with MoneyControl that he is too old to direct a movie at this time.
In 1999, Mahesh gave up directing after helming the Sanjay Dutt film Kartoos. Breaking his word, he directed Sadak 2, which starred his daughter Alia Bhatt. The movie, which was a follow-up to his 1991 drama Sadak, debuted in 2020 to harsh reviews.

Recalls his collaboration with Alia ‘disastrous’

Sadak 2

When asked in the interview if he would be directing Alia once more, he laughed and said that their previous endeavor had been a complete failure. “Well, we had a disastrous collaboration. So but, that was a very strangely easy time to put in mind, but as you just say that you are a part of the entertainment world, if you deal with the intoxicating hives and the aggravation, you deal with the vilification and the downside of it also. Well, as I said, I am not going to be directing. I will be doing what I do the best, which is mentoring,” Mahesh stated.

He discussed his choice in an interview with Indian Express as well. Identifying him as a “extinct volcano,” he said. “However, I don’t have the thirst to leave my footprints on the sands of time, which is paramount in the entertainment world. Those who make it, have an insatiable thirst to leave their footprints on the sands of time. Vikram has it, Avika has it, I am outdated, a has-been,” the filmmaker added.

He now considers mentoring and helping others reach their full potential to be a “far more challenging, gratifying task,” and he is happy to do so.
