Gabby Petito’s family continues to be profoundly impacted by her tragic death. Her parents and stepparents are coping with their grief and preserving her memory nearly four years after she passed away.

When Gabby’s death was found in September 2021 at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her journey as a YouTuber chronicling life on the road with her fiancé Brian Laundrie came to an end in tragedy.

American Murder: Gabby Petito, a Netflix documentary that premiered on February 17, 2025, provides insight into Gabby’s last days as seen by her parents.

In June 2024, Gabby’s father, Joe Petito, told PEOPLE that he doesn’t think there is ever any closure following the death of a child.

“You’re never going to get closure over the loss of a child,” Joe stated with utmost grief.

“There will always be a hole in your heart that’s never going away.” Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, stated in another interview with PEOPLE, “We’re never going to feel like we have justice.” Nichole added, “It’s been three years now since the last time I heard her voice or seen her, and that’s really hard.”  They sued the Moab police for failing to safeguard Gabby during a traffic stop in August 2021, among other things.

According to body camera evidence, Gabby was clearly angry, and police officers allegedly disregarded indications of domestic abuse. According to their $50 million wrongful death lawsuit filed in November 2022, Gabby might still be alive if the cops had taken a different course of action. Even though the case was dropped in November 2024, her parents are still optimistic about what can happen next.

Nichole and Joe also filed a lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s parents, alleging they were aware of Gabby’s passing and where her body was. The families came to an agreement in February 2024, and according to Gabby’s family lawyer, the settlement would allow them to “move on and continue to honor the legacy of our beautiful daughter, Gabby.”
