Newtopia hits highest viewership, breaking records of a grand premiere on Coupang Play

On its first day of release, Newtopia, which stars Jisoo from BLACKPINK and Park Jung Min, became the most watched series on Coupang Play. The plot of the show centers on a couple who are attempting to get back together following a catastrophic zombie outbreak in the metropolis.

The Korean streaming service Coupang Play announced on February 8, 2025, that the debut of their recently launched original series, Newtopia, broke all previous records. The show, which had only been released a day earlier, received a staggering amount of views, making it the most-watched series on the platform on the day of its debut. For a worldwide audience, the series was also concurrently available on Amazon Prime Video.

In order to set up an exciting and unpredictable adventure, the first two episodes of Newtopia introduce the main characters, Jae Yoon (played by Park Jung Min) and Young Joo (played by Jisoo). Young Joo battles the stress of starting a career, while Jae Yoon, who is presently in the military, spends his time wishing he had his girlfriend.  The pair decides to take a vacation together, but as hordes of hungry zombies overwhelm Seoul, mayhem breaks out.

The tale, which is based on Han Sang Woon’s novel Influenza, centers on soldier Jaeyoon and his girlfriend Youngjoo as they battle against swarms of zombies in a Seoul high-rise building after splitting up. While Youngjoo becomes more resilient in her struggle for survival, Jaeyoon changes from a weak, timid guy into a self-assured leader as they negotiate the chaos.

The show also stars Kim Joon Han, Im Sung Jae, Kim Chan Hyung, Lee Hak Joo, Kwon Seung Woo, Kim Sang Heun, Tang Jun Sang, and others.
