The women who have accused South Korea’s football team captain, Son Heung Min, of rearing her child as the father has finally been held, today. A man who is accused of extorting money from the player has also been taken into custody.

The verdict have received negative views from people over the purported double standards through which the case was perceived.

On May 17, Judge Yoon Wonmook at the Seoul Central District Court laid arrest warrants for given suspects: a woman in her 20s aka Son’s ex-girlfriend, and a man in his 40s who dated the former after the instance. Judge Yoon mentioned “concerns about destruction of evidence and flight risk” over the issuance of dedicated warrants.

Details on the Son Heung Min extortion case

The woman is reportedly accused of posing threat of expose of her alleged pregnancy to the media until Son paid her a speculated settlement of almost ₩300 million KRW (about $214,000 USD). The man in question, added to the adversary and tried to retrieve ₩70.0 million KRW (about $50,000 USD) from Son after dating the women, but failed.

Even though the verdict seems usual, the speed and gravitas with which the investigation was carried out has caused a stir among many Koreans. Online forums gathered traction over the case with large-scale discussions over how such stalking and blackmail cases encompassing females are handled with minimum gravity and propensity. The backlash seemed over the speed of justice which seems different for varied people.

  • “What the hell, did they attempt murder or something?”
  • “So it’s this easy to get arrested, yet women who are stalked and threatened still end up dead all the time?”
  • “Wow, they’ve really lost their minds. Fuck. I’ll remember this judicial system because of Son Heung Min.”
  • “Are they out of their minds? Ha. 😂😂😂”
  • “They’re not doing their actual jobs and just tossing sensational crap to the media. Fucking bastards.”
  • “A football player really is like royalty, huh? Rich, famous, and male South Korea really lives up to the name ‘Han-nam-guk’ [a slang for a male-dominated Korea].”
