The Witch, the new drama, has had a strong debut in the K-drama market and raised the bar for network debuts. It is a mystery romance based on the well-known webtoon by Moving creator Kang Full, tells the tale of Park Mi Jeong, played by Roh Jeong Eui, a lady who withdraws from society because of bearing a traumatic background. Park Jinyoung, who plays Lee Dong Jin in GOT7 is a man who is adamant about breaking through the barriers she has put up around herself.
In episode 1, Park Mi Jeong, a girl who is troubled by a superstition that she brings ill luck, reunites with Lee Dong Jin, a shrewd data miner. She caught Dong Jin’s attention when they first met in high school. He is now motivated to dispel the rumors after seeing her struggle. The first episode informs viewers about Mi Jeong’s narrative and the beliefs around her through a seamless transition between the past and present.
On February 15, the eagerly awaited drama achieved the greatest debut ratings ever for a Channel A drama, making history. With an average nationwide rating of 2.4 percent, the first episode broke the network’s previous record and gave the series a promising start, according to Nielsen Korea.
Other dramas saw significant changes in viewership as well, even as The Witch celebrated its record-breaking premiere. With a remarkable national rating of 5.9 percent for its series finale, Motel California concluded on a strong note. This nearly matched its all-time peak of 6.0 percent and represented a noteworthy 2.2 percent gain from the previous episode.
Meanwhile, audiences have taken notice of The Witch after its unprecedented launch. The drama is anticipated to continue its momentum and even break even more records in the coming weeks as excitement for new episodes grows.
