Tom Cruise will be honored with the Oscar after spending decades in Hollywood. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had previously proclaimed this week that the actor will be conferred with an Honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards in November, for his exceptional contribution in the field of cinema, Deadline quoted. The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, 62 has emerged as the most successful actors of all time backed with an Oscar nomination, four times.

Tom Cruise to bag the honorary Oscar

The Academy mentioned that the award is given based on the ‘extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement’, especially to the actor’s dedicated work towards filmmaking and stunt-based prowess.

Cruise will be receiving the award with production designer Wynn Thomas, choreographer and actor Debbie Allen, and Dolly Parton, who will be conferred with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Does Tom Cruise stand a chance to win in the primary category?

According to Deadline, actors like Paul Newman and Henry Fonda who were blessed with the honorary Oscars managed to bag the Best Actor in the next year. Moreover, Laurence Olivier, a Honorary Oscar recipient in 1947, got the Best Actor two years later. Harold Russell made an impressive mark with a Honorary and a competitive Oscar in the same year.

Celebs like Ennio Morricone and Spike Lee also bagged awards in the honorary segment and the competitive genres respectively.

The Deadline report mentioned that the timing for the award ceremony is auspicious for the actor who is now working in collaboration with an Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The project expected to release next year might bring glory in the competitive segment if everything sits well.
