The folk-horror movie Tumbbad, which debuted in 2018, has generated a lot of buzz since its re-release. The highly praised movie, which stars Sohum Shah, did not get much attention at the box office when it first came out, but this week’s rerelease seems to have changed things in the movie’s favor. The movie has now even outperformed The Buckingham Murders in terms of first-day box office collection.
Tumbbad surpasses the Hansal-Mehta directorial

Trade expert Taran Adarsh posted on X, “When #Tumbbad first hit theatres in 2018, it had collected 65 lakhs on Friday, 1.15 cr on Saturday and 1.45 cr on Sunday. In a remarkable twist, the film delivers a big surprise by collecting a significantly higher amount on its *re-release* Friday.”
He added, “The tremendous love and goodwill that #Tumbbad has garnered over the years, combined with *affordable* ticket prices, have significantly contributed to its success. [Week 1; re-release] Fri ₹ 1.65 cr. #India biz.”
In contrast, The Buckingham Murders had a weak premiere, according to the Sachs report. Kareena Kapoor’s detective role in Hansal Mehta’s investigative thriller barely brought in ₹1.15 crore on Friday. Both the original Hinglish version (with 80% of the language in English and 20% in Hindi) and a Hindi-dubbed version of The Buckingham Murders were released.

More updates
The most recent movie to join the trend of returning several films to theaters is Tumbbad (2018). Other films that have done this include Rockstar (2011) and Laila Majnu (2018). Tumbbad, which was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, features Sohum Shah as Vinayak Rao and tells the tale of his quest in the Indian town of Tumbbad for a lost wealth from the 20th century.
Tumbbad 2, the planned sequel, has been revealed and is presently in development.
