The UNDER FIFTEEN controversy

The reality show, precisely a survival k-pop segment to channelise the new generation of artists in the South Korean music industry was announced with much anticipation. However, things toppled when the age range of selecting participants was revealed to be between 13 to 15 years and the spark later caught fire when portfolios of young girls were posted implying heavy makeup and adult-like styling. Some stated that the makers are overtly sexualising the young girls in the name of incurring fame.

Later producer PD Lee Kook Yon, added that the shortlisting could be done for kids of 5 years young, raising eyebrows yet again. “Some participants are as young as 5 years old. Our audition itself is a verification process. There are many kids who shine in 10 to 30-second short videos, but we want to find the real talents among them”.
