On December 23, 2024, renowned filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke Award laureate Shyam Benegal passed away. The director is credited with creating some of the most highly praised Hindi films, including Manthan, Ankur, and Zubeidaa. His daughter Pia Benegal verified the tragic news later this evening. He celebrated his 90th birthday a week ago.

Pia Benegal verified that Shyam Benegal died at the age of 90, according to an article in India Today. According to reports, he passed away at 6:30 PM from a persistent kidney-related illness. The film industry and his fans were stunned to learn that the director had been admitted to Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital for treatment.

A week ago, on December 14, 2024, he celebrated his birthday with his family, friends, and fellow film industry professionals. Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Kunal Kapoor were spotted at the gala.

Benegal directed some of the best Hindi films of the 1970s and 1980s and created his first movie at the age of 12 with a camera his father had given him.

Shyam was well-known for her films with strong female leads and socially conscious themes. He was renowned for sensitively and thoroughly presenting these topics, which has motivated a new generation of filmmakers.

He produced well-known movies including Zubeidaa, starring Karisma Kapoor, and Ankur, Manthan, Mandi (1983). In addition, Benegal received numerous honors over his career, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, the highest accolade in Indian cinema, the Padma Shri in 1976, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the 18 National Film Awards.
