Viola Davis rose to become one of Hollywood’s most admired actors through her stunning portrayals in films like “Fences” and “The Woman King”. Her illustrious career has now won her one of the Golden Globes’ greatest accolades.

The Golden Globes announced Wednesday morning that Davis will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 82nd annual awards ceremony on January 5. The actor has received recognition for a number of strong roles in movies like “The Help,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “Doubt” and has captivated viewers on television with the legal thriller drama “How to Get Away with Murder.”

Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes, referred to Davis as a “luminary” and praised the actor’s commitment to her work and influence on the business.

“Viola’s courage in portraying complex, powerful characters has broken barriers and paved new paths, making her an emblem of excellence and an ideal recipient of this prestigious award,” Hoehne stated.

The 59-year-old Davis has two Tony Awards, the most recent of which she received for Fences in 2010. She also received an Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder in 2015, as well as an Oscar and Golden Globe for the Fences movie in 2016. After receiving a Grammy for best audio book, narration, and storytelling recording for her memoir Finding Me last year, she became an EGOT.

Davis received the William O. Douglas Award from the Public Counsel in 2022 in recognition of her dedication to social justice initiatives. She has collaborated with several initiatives to alleviate hunger among children in the US.

Davis established JuVee Productions, a production firm that creates and produces indie films, theater, television, and digital content, with her husband, Julius Tennon. The studio apparently intends to return to South Africa to film the genuine story of a teenage African refugee’s journey to the United States after filming an action thriller in Cape Town earlier this year for Amazon Studios.

A gala event honoring television accomplishments will be held on January 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to celebrate Davis and the 2025 Carol Burnett Award winner. The Globes will honor both awards with a separate gala for the first time.
