Jannik Sinner, the champion of the Australian Open, defeated Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday to win his 20th match of 2024 and advance to the Miami Open semifinals for the third time in the last four years.
After Russia defeated No. 22 seed Nicolas Jarry later on Wednesday, Sinner, the second seed, will take on No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
Sinner advanced to 20-1 overall after making it to his fourth final four of the season. In 2021 and 2023, he made it to the finals of this competition but lost both times.
“It was a really tough match, but I was happy about the performance,” Sinner said.
Sinner, 22, stated that Machac served effectively early on and his aggression kept the game competitive for a while. But Sinner maintained his incredible run, breaking his opponent’s serve four games to go to the next round.
“I always say when it all feels good on the court, it’s easy to play tennis,” he stated. “But it has to start off in a practice session when you don’t feel well, but you still have to practice and this can make the difference.”
