Lindsay Horan scores as USWNT beats Brazil to win CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup was won by the United States in California on Sunday, 1-0 against Brazil due to a goal by Lindsey Horan. US captain Horan scored in first-half injury time at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium to cap an overall disappointing 12-team  tournament.

The Brazilians failed to get a single shot on target in the first half, with Dudi Sampaio’s 10th-minute free-kick sailing over. Gabi Nunes also saw a speculative 15th-minute effort from the edge of the area sail high into the seats.

In the first half, the American women struggled to create many chances for goals through open play and were similarly off-target.

Horan had indicated her aerial threat in the 40th minute, bending to direct a header that Brazil goalkeeper Luciana saved as it set to enter the net. Horan’s near-miss was the only US shot on goal during the half.

The goal ultimately came on the last play of halftime. Trinity Rodman raced down the right wing before passing back to Emily Fox in space. Fox swung in an appealing deep ball to the back post, and Horan was there to send the header back across the goal, giving Luciana no chance.

The second half started in much the same way, with both teams creating little of note. In minute 85, Brazil caused worry in the US defence when Geyse’s brilliant flick from a free kick went narrowly past Alyssa Naeher’s post.
