Pakistan to pay highest-ever salary to Shane Watson for head coach role; Report

Since the ODI World Cup last year, Pakistan Cricket has been in the headlines due to the lack of a permanent head coach for the national side. Mohammad Hafeez filled in for the Australia and New Zealand tours, although he is no longer a member of the PCB after Mohsin Naqvi became chairman of the board. Meanwhile, PCB appears to be interested in hiring former Australia cricketer Shane Watson as head coach, and it is now up to him to make a choice.

As per PCB sources, Watson wanted a large annual salary of $2 million, which the board even granted. If he accepts the position and becomes Pakistan’s head coach, he will get the biggest salary ever given to a foreign coach in Pakistan’s cricket history. However, it has been said that Watson is still unwilling because he would have to spend most of his time in Pakistan, while his multiple roles as a coach and commentator in other leagues will also affect it.

The source stated, “He has a young family in Australia and also has commitments in the USA Major League. So, he is weighing his options as the board wants him to spend maximum time in Pakistan helping them also discover and groom talent at domestic level.”

Watson has no prior experience coaching any national team, but he surprised many during his stint with the Quetta Gladiators, helping the team qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years.
