Xabi Alonso to stay on as Bayer Leverkusen manager amid interest from Liverpool

Xabi Alonso will remain as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager, putting a stop to reports that he may take up the empty Liverpool and Bayern Munich jobs.

“This is the right place for me to be, to develop as a coach,” Alonso said Friday. He stated that he thought about his future during the recent international break before contacting Leverkusen.

With eight games left in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen is 10 points ahead of opponents and poised to win its first German title. This season, Leverkusen has not lost in any of the competitions.

Alonso is now one of the most in-demand football coaches in the world because of his record. His contract with Leverkusen is set to expire after two more seasons.

Alonso, who joined Liverpool in 2004 after leaving Real Sociedad, went on to play 210 games for the team and win the Champions League in 2005. He moved to Real Madrid in 2009, a team with whom he has recently been associated and then he joined Bayern five years later. He retired from football in 2017.

In October 2022, Leverkusen offered him his first management job in first-team football and after taking over with the club second from bottom in the Bundesliga, Alonso guided them to sixth place.
