The Right to Disconnect Bill, introduced in Parliament in 2018, proposes giving employees the right to ignore work-related communication outside designated working hours. Introduced by MP Supriya Sule, the bill responds to concerns arising from increased digital work demands.
The draft calls for organisations to formalise policies on after-hours engagement, define communication protocols and establish committees to resolve related complaints. It also outlines that employees should not face disciplinary action for declining communication beyond office hours unless it falls under a defined emergency category.
On the broader debate, Adecco India Country Manager Sunil Chemmankotil noted:
“India must balance a digitally driven workforce with clear rest boundaries. A phased approach aligned with new labour laws will help protect well-being without disrupting business continuity.”
The bill remains pending. No legislation currently exists in India granting employees the statutory right to disconnect.
