Next-Gen Armoured Systems: DRDO and TASL Roll Out VIKRAM VT 21 with Unmanned Turret

Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has showcased its collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in developing next-generation Advanced Armoured Platforms — VIKRAM VT 21 — along with a 30mm unmanned turret.

Designed by the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE) and developed and manufactured by TASL with DRDO support, the prototypes were completed in under 30 months. The platforms were flagged off for trials on April 25 at the Vehicle Dynamic Test Track at DRDO’s National Centre for Automotive Testing (NCAT), in the presence of DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat and senior officials.

The programme marks a key milestone in public-private collaboration under the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) model, with TASL serving as a strategic partner in the VIKRAM VT 21 project.

Mr. Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tata Advanced Systems Limited, said: “This development project has created a new benchmark in Tata Advanced Systems and DRDO collaboration, both in terms of time to completion and quality of systems provided.”

A key highlight of the platform is the integration of a 30mm unmanned turret, jointly developed by TASL and DRDO. The turret enhances firepower and precision targeting while ensuring crew safety by allowing operation from within the vehicle hull.

Both tracked and wheeled variants of the platform have undergone rigorous mobility trials at NCAT, demonstrating performance across diverse terrains. Further trials are expected in the coming weeks.

The Advanced Armoured Platform has been designed with a focus on mobility, modularity, and survivability, incorporating next-generation combat capabilities, including provisions for crewless operations.

TASL said the development reinforces its role in India’s defence ecosystem, as it continues to work with DRDO and the armed forces to build indigenous, future-ready combat systems aligned with the country’s self-reliance goals.
