Here’s what happens when you don’t get enough sleep

Lack of sleep may have a negative impact on your physical and emotional health, thus doctors recommend that individuals of all ages get enough sleep. A recent study found four different sleeping patterns and described how they impact a person’s health. A research released last month in Psychosomatic Medicine found that people with dementia are significantly more likely to develop chronic illnesses.

Researchers at Penn State University reviewed data from 3,700 individuals, noting their sleep habits and chronic health issues at two 10-year apart.  The researchers found four unique sleep patterns: good sleepers, weekend catch-up sleepers, insomnia sleepers and nappers.

Adults should sleep for at least seven hours per night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but it appears that many individuals don’t receive that much sleep.  More than half of the research participants were characterized as insomniacs or nappers. Both of these sleeping habits are not considered healthy. Individuals who had sleeplessness for ten years reported a high risk for heart disease, diabetes, depression and physical weakness. People who slept frequently during the day had a higher risk of diabetes, cancer and weakness.

According to the researchers, persons with less education and who are jobless are at greater risk of complaining about insomnia, whereas older people, adults and retired people are more likely to have napping sleeping patterns.
