Ways to trace fake oral rehydration salts to prevent the health risks involved
Experts emphasizes the need for finding genuine ORS in order to prevent dehydration and preserve the body’s electrolyte balance.
“Most of the ORS in the Indian pharmacies are fake! These companies trademark the word ‘ORS’, but they are not an ORS! Fake ORS has high sugar and dangerously low sodium. Consuming fake ORS has resulted in many kids being admitted to the ICU because of brain swelling,” stated Himatsingka, as published by Indian Express.
He added that a genuine ORS will state “Based on WHO formula,” as it falls under the drug category, whereas a phony ORS can have an FSSAI certification because it falls under the food category.
“ORS helps balance the body’s electrolytes and fluid, preventing further complications,” mentioned Dr Aklesh Tandekar, head consultant critical care at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road.
Why is it a health concern?
The high sugar content of fake ORS might exacerbate diarrhea and lead to dehydration. “This is because too much sugar draws water into the intestines, leading to more fluid loss. Additionally, fake ORS that has too little sodium can interrupt the body’s electrolyte balance and result in severe complications including brain swelling,” mentioned Dr Tandekar.
“The imbalanced composition of fake ORS severely affects the body’s fluid regulation and electrolyte balance, putting people at risk,” added Dr Tandekar. He further concurred that ORS is more often categorized as a drug or medication than as a food item. He continued, “Strict guidelines are followed by real ORS formulations to ensure standard quality is maintained.”
“Always look for proper packaging with clear instructions, correct ingredient information, and regulatory markings. Real ORS products will have appropriate labels indicating their quality standards,” the expert wrapped up.
